Do reputation agencies use bots and fake accounts?

Some do, and hiring one is the most reliable way to turn a reputation problem into a permanent one. We do not use bot accounts, sockpuppet profiles or vote services, and this page explains the reasoning rather than just asserting the position.

The argument against manipulation here is mechanical, not moral. It does not work for long, and the failure is worse than the problem it was hired to solve.

What the platforms actually prohibit

The rules are narrower than most brands assume, and the distinction matters.

Reddit's content policy prohibits vote manipulation and undisclosed coordinated promotion. It does not prohibit companies taking part. A brand that answers a question in its own name, in a subreddit that permits it, is doing something explicitly allowed.

On Quora the bar is stated directly: a user should disclose any relevant affiliations explicitly in an answer or in the credential that appears with the answer.

So the line is disclosure, not participation. Agencies that operate fake accounts are not working around a rule that bans them from the platform. They are breaking a rule they did not need to break.

Why it backfires

Enforcement is retroactive and total. When an account is removed, everything it ever posted goes with it, including the contributions that were genuinely useful. A brand that built visibility across fifty answers loses fifty answers, not the one that triggered the review.

It can escalate beyond the account. On Reddit, manipulation associated with a domain can get that domain filtered site-wide. The outcome is not that the brand loses the ability to manipulate. It loses the ability to participate at all, permanently, including the honest reply it may badly need during a future incident.

Detection is not a coin flip. Moderators and platform integrity teams see these patterns constantly: accounts created in batches, voting in formation, the same phrasing across profiles. The brand pays for something that looks sophisticated from the outside and obvious from the inside.

And the record outlives the agency. When this surfaces, it surfaces as a story about the brand. The agency is a footnote in it.

What legitimate work looks like

It is slower and less impressive to describe.

  1. Attributable accounts. Real profiles, with history, that can withstand someone clicking the username. If an account could not survive being examined, it is not an asset.

  2. Disclosure as standard. Stated affiliation, on every platform, every time. It also performs better. People would rather hear about an edge case from someone who works on the product.

  3. Answering the question actually asked. Including when the honest answer does not route to the product.

  4. Displacement rather than deletion. You usually cannot remove someone else's post, and should not try to when it breaks no rule. What works is changing what the whole page says, which is the approach in handling a negative Reddit thread and handling a negative Quora answer.

Our position on review acquisition specifically is set out on the review and response management page, which is the right place for it.

How to vet any agency, including us

Four questions. They are cheap to ask and hard to answer falsely.

"Can you show me the accounts?" A provider doing attributable work can show you real profiles. One that cannot, or that calls its method proprietary, is describing something it does not want audited.

"What will you not do?" An agency with no stated limits has not thought about where the line is, or has decided not to have one.

"What happens if this gets caught?" The honest answer involves the brand's exposure, not just the agency's. Anyone who has not considered it has not priced the risk they are selling you.

"Can you guarantee removal or placement?" The correct answer is no. Removal depends on a platform's decision and placement depends on ranking systems nobody controls. A guarantee means either manipulation or a definition of success that will be revised later.

Apply these to us too. That is the point of writing them down.

The honest limitation

This approach is slower. It does not produce a chart that bends upward in week two, and for a genuinely bad product it does not produce much at all, because the complaints are accurate and the fix is not a communications fix.

What it produces is a position that survives scrutiny, which is the only kind worth paying for in a category where the failure mode is a public one. How we work across the platforms is covered on the Reddit marketing and Quora marketing service pages.

Frequently asked questions

Do reputation agencies use bot accounts?

Some do. It is against the site-wide rules of every major community platform, it is detectable, and enforcement removes the whole account along with every legitimate contribution attached to it. We do not use bot accounts, sockpuppets or vote services.

Is brand participation on Reddit against the rules?

No, provided it is transparent. Reddit's content policy prohibits undisclosed coordinated promotion and vote manipulation, not brands taking part. Many subreddits welcome a company that answers questions honestly and says who it is.

Do I have to say I work for the company?

On Quora, yes, explicitly. Its policy is that a user should disclose any relevant affiliation in the answer or in the credential shown with it. On Reddit, disclosure is what separates permitted participation from prohibited undisclosed promotion.

What happens if an agency gets caught manipulating a platform?

The account is removed, and everything it ever posted goes with it. On Reddit a ban can extend to the domain being filtered site-wide, which means the brand loses the ability to participate at all, not just the ability to manipulate.

How do I check whether an agency is doing this?

Ask for the accounts. A legitimate provider can show you real, attributable profiles with history. An agency that cannot name where the work appears, or describes its method only as proprietary, is describing something it does not want audited.
