Brand Credibility

What influencer marketing is

Influencer marketing is the work of borrowing a creator's credibility with their own audience, on terms both sides can defend afterwards.

It is not paid media with a face on it. Impressions are not the deliverable, and an audience that follows someone daily can tell the difference between an opinion and a read-out script within a sentence. What you are actually buying is a transfer of trust, which behaves differently from reach: it is slower to build, harder to measure, and once spent badly it cannot be bought back.

The scope is selection and the brief, disclosure done properly, and what the coverage does to your brand-name search and to AI answers about your category after the campaign has finished.

How it works

1. Define what the campaign is for

Awareness, category education, trial, or presence in the searches and answers that follow are four different objectives requiring four different briefs and, usually, four different creators. Campaigns that skip this step end up measured on whichever number came out highest.

2. Vet the creator, not the follower count

Audience overlap with your actual buyer, the quality of the comment section, past controversies, and whether the audience is real. A creator with a modest, genuinely engaged following in your category is worth more than a large general audience that will scroll past, and the comment section is the fastest way to tell which one you are looking at.

3. Brief for honesty, not a script

A creator reading your copy verbatim is obvious to the people who follow them, and it costs both sides more than the post earns. The brief sets the claims that must be accurate, the things that must not be said, and then leaves the voice alone.

4. Get disclosure right before publication

India's ASCI guidelines require a prominent, hard-to-miss disclosure on any paid or barter promotion, and the platforms have their own branded-content rules on top of that. The label belongs where the audience sees it before they form a view, not in the last line of a caption. This gets settled before anything goes live, not after someone asks.

5. Measure against the brief, and against what people search afterwards

Views and engagement, judged against the objective set in step one — and then the part most campaigns never look at: whether brand-name search, community mentions and AI answers about your category changed in the weeks after the coverage.

Who it's for

This is a fit if you are in a category where trial follows demonstration or transferred trust, you are launching something that needs explaining before it needs reach, or you are entering an unfamiliar market where one credible local voice is worth more than broad national coverage.

This is not a fit if you want the partnership to read as unpaid, organic enthusiasm. Undisclosed paid promotion breaches ASCI's guidelines and the platforms' branded-content policies, and a creator being called out for a hidden advertisement produces a bigger and far more durable story than the advertisement ever was — attached to your brand as much as to theirs.

It is also the wrong fit for brands treating creators as media inventory at a fixed cost per view. Outcomes vary in a way paid placements do not, and nobody can guarantee a return on a particular person's endorsement. And it is the wrong moment if the product has an unresolved quality problem: creators read their own comment sections, and one bad wave ends the relationship in public.

Related work

Creator coverage frequently produces a rise in organic reviews as a downstream effect, which is worth planning for in review and response management — the same page that sets out plainly what we will not do about reviews. Creator claims get dissected in communities within days, which is Reddit marketing, and the coverage itself becomes a retrieved source that changes what models say about your category, covered in AI search visibility. For categories where creator-driven trust is the mechanism, see a silver jewellery brand and a premium pet nutrition brand.

Frequently asked questions

How do you choose which creators to work with?

On audience overlap with your buyer, the quality of their comment section, and whether their past work suggests they will still be defensible in a year. Follower count is the last thing considered, because it is the number most easily inflated and the one least connected to whether anyone acts on a recommendation.

Do micro-influencers work better than large ones?

Often, for trial and for categories that need explaining, because engagement tends to be genuine and the recommendation reads as personal. Large creators are better when the objective is broad awareness. The honest answer is that it depends on the objective, which is why the objective is settled first.

Is disclosure legally required in India?

Yes. ASCI's guidelines for digital media require a prominent disclosure on any promotion where value has changed hands, including barter and free product, and it must be hard to miss rather than buried. The platforms add their own branded-content requirements. We treat this as non-negotiable, and it is settled before publication.

How do you measure whether it worked?

Against the objective agreed at the start, not against whichever metric performed best. Depending on the brief that means reach and engagement quality, trial or signup movement, or the change in brand-name search and AI answers afterwards. We report the ones we said we would, including when they are flat.

Can you guarantee reach or views?

No, and a promised view count is a signal you are being sold paid media rather than a partnership. Creator performance varies with the platform's distribution and the audience's mood that week. What can be committed to is the selection standard, the brief, the disclosure and the measurement.

How much does influencer marketing cost?

Engagements are quoted individually, and creator fees sit separately from our own so you can see both. Rates vary enormously by category, platform and audience size, and publishing a single figure would be misleading for almost everyone reading it. We scope after the objective and the shortlist are agreed.
